James Waldie & Sons, Tile Makers, 103 Leith Walk, Edinburgh, Midlothian. Probably manufactured at the Newbattle Brickworks, Newtongrange, Midlothian where the company had a lease in 1872.

Below – Virtually the same stamp on a brick found by Joan Faithfull in the Edinburgh area. It does however not have the 4 x overly large carbunkles as per the bricks above. The chamfered sides to the frog also look more defined.

Found Jedburgh, Scottish Borders. Wallyford Brickworks, Musselburgh, East Lothian. There is no “Edinburgh” brickworks but the Edinburgh Collieries Company owned collieries at Bankton, Bellyford, Carberry, Fleets, Wallyford and Prestongrange, the latter two sites also having brickworks. Wallyford Brickworks, Musselburgh, East Lothian. Brickworks – Located between No.1 and No.3 pits, the Wallyford Brickworks were part of the NCB’s operations from 1924-69 (Bourhill, p9).
