Nethercommon Brickworks, Inchinnan Road, Paisley, Renfrewshire

(Note – SBH – The brickworks situated in the Nethercommon area of Paisley are often difficult to separate when trying to ascertain which piece of researched information should be allocated to which brickworks. The same goes for conclusively determining which location on the old OS maps refers to which brickworks. If anyone notices any error or has any relevant suggestions then please get in touch. The brickworks concerned are Shortroods Brickworks, Gockston Brickworks, Galts Nethercommon Brickworks, North Caledonia Brickworks, Caledonia Fireclay Works and the Caledonian Brick and Drain Tile Works).

11/02/1860 – Paisley and Renfrewshire Gazette – John Galt, bricklayer, No 6 Wardrop Street, Paisley. Begs respectfully to inform his friends and the public generally, that he has commenced business on his own account, and from his long practical experience, by strict attention to all orders entrusted to his care, and moderate charges, he hopes to merit a share of the public patronage. Orders left at the Yard, 22 New Smithhills, at 6 Wardrop Street or at Hugh Smith’s, 1 High Street, will be attended to. Paisley 10/01/1860. 01/05/1873 – North British Daily Mail – Burgh parochial board. The regular monthly meeting was held last night. Mr John Brown, of Thrushcraig, presiding. The Asylum Committee minutes showed that the north field at Riccartsbar had been let for a year for £26 and the south field for £13 for the same period. (Note – SBH – I think this reference to the land being leased at Riccartsbar is different to the land at Nethercommon which follows). An offer for the purchase of the ground belonging to the Board, and situated at Nethercommon, from Mr John Galt, 29 Causeyside Street had been under the consideration of the Asylum Committee. The ground measures fifteen acres and consists of two fields containing fine clay, especially valuable for the manufacture of bricks or tiles. Ten years ago it was purchased by the Board for the sum of £750, and Mr Galt’s offer was £1550, which the committee recommended the Board to accept. Bailie Watson considered the sum named a good price, but be was not sure that it was a good plan to dispose of the ground of a public Board by private bargain, and seeing it was the first time it had been brought before them he did not think they should agree to accept of it that night. The Inspector explained that on Thursday (today), according to the terms of the letter, they would virtually have no offer. Mr Robert Richardson then moved that the minutes be adopted, and Mr Galt’s offer accepted on the condition that he would pay all the expenses of conveyance. Mr William Gillespie seconded the motion. Mr Watson moved as an amendment that settlement of the matter be adjourned for a week. The motion was carried, Bailie Watson being the only supporter of his amendment

25/07/1899 – The Scotsman – Boy drowned at Paisley. On Sunday evening, shortly after seven o’clock, a sad drowning accident happened at Galt’s Brickwork, Inchinnan Road, Paisley, whereby Arthur Morton, nine years of age, son of James Morton, a carter, residing at 9 New Smithhill, lost his life. Along with another boy, Gebbie, he had gone to this brickwork, where there is an old clay hole, which was at one time filled with water, but into which a lot of rubbish has been put. This had formed what appeared to be a perfectly substantial surface, and the boys ventured on it with the purpose of crossing. The surface gave way, and the boys sank. Gebbie managed to make his way out but Morton sank before assistance could be procured. Every means was taken to recover the body, but up till last night, it had not been reached.
