Found at the Gartliston Works.
I do believe this is yet another example of a Scottish brick manufacturer making bricks for a customer and adding the customer’s name to the product although I do not know what the R & C stands for as yet.
I have only ever found R & C bricks at the Hurll Gartliston or Garnqueen works in Glenboig and as such I am, until proven otherwise, happy to identify Hurll as the maker.

This special shape was found by Ian Suddaby on the site of the long vanished locomotive engine sheds at Carlisle. Several other firebricks found nearby were parts of a locomotive firebox and this might have been too. I imagine a shaft of some function went through the hole. This example is not in my possession….
