Scottish bricks found in USA

Thanks to Mark Norstad for the following information.

.

Mark states – The ‘Heathery Knowe’ was found underneath an old house in Marin County, CA (near San Francisco).  The age of the house is unknown.

Below – Heathery Knowe Patent Glasgow – Heatheryknowe Fire Clay Works, Glasgow.

(Note – SBH – Heathery Knowe appears to be two words  – the norm is it is all one word. This variation has not yet been found and recorded on Scottish soil. I am aware of one other like this and it too was found in California).

Below – Patent R Brown & Son Paisley – Robert Brown & Son, Ferguslie Fireclay Works and Caledonian Brick and Tile Works, Paisley.

Mark states – This brick was found in an old landfill on the shore of San Pablo Bay (the next bay upstream from SF Bay). All were in the same strata of ash and burnt debris.  Based on this, I’m guessing that when San Francisco was cleared after the earthquake, all of the debris was dumped in the bay and forgotten.  There are also large quantities of salt-glazed drain and flue, and numerous bricks from English yards: SNOWBALL, COWEN, RAMSAY and BENSON, along with endless piles of common reds.

Below – Patent R Brown & Son Paisley – Robert Brown & Son, Ferguslie Fireclay Works and Caledonian Brick and Tile Works, Paisley.

Mark states – I found this brick at Candlestick Point in San Francisco.  That was the sight of old Candlestick Park, the baseball and football stadium.  On well-attended game days, auxiliary parking lots would be opened.  These parking lots were built on landfill, and extended to the edge of San Francisco Bay.  Bricks were scattered all over the lot, and were falling out of the banks into the bay.  I probably recovered a few hundred bricks before games.  Again, I suspect that this landfill was material from the 1906 earthquake, because of the age of the bricks, and the large amount of granite building pieces.

Below – Bonnybridge – Found at a landfill location on San Pablo Bay.

Bonnybridge Silica & Fireclay Co Ltd, Bonnybridge.

Chapelhall Works, Lanarkshire.

Hepworth Ceramic Holdings plc (GR-Stein Refractories Ltd. parent co) bought the Bonnybridge Silica & Fireclay Co. Ltd in 1972, closed Bonnybridge works in 1973 and closed Chapelhall in 1980. Therefore between 1972 and 1980, GR-Stein Refractories probably continued to manufacture bricks with this trademark for a time.
