(Note – SBH – I am uncertain where the brickworks operated by James Shaw were located. I don’t think they were sited at 17 Bowling Green St, Leith, Edinburgh but the entry at 03/02/1881 may suggest it is a possibility).

15/11/1853 – Greenock Advertiser – Deaths. At Bellfield House, Dumbarton on the 9th instant, Johnann, aged 3 years and 1 month and John aged 1 year and 3 months, youngest daughter and only son of Mr James Shaw, brick and tile maker. (Note – SBH – I am uncertain if this is the same James Shaw but I have included the reference here to ensure it is not missed).

03/02/1881 – Edinburgh Evening News – Yard to let on lease containing about 600 square yards with steam power (14-Horse). J Shaw, 17 Bowling Green St, Leith.

25/06/1881 – Edinburgh Evening News – Houses to let. Reduced rents after term. Open every evening, 6 to 8. J Shaw, 17 Bowling Green St, Leith, Edinburgh.

1886 – James Shaw, brick builder and brick maker and oakum and curled hair manufacturer, 17 Bowling Green St, Leith, Edinburgh.

09/08/1887 – Edinburgh Evening News – Bowling Green Street. Houses recently built. Modern conveniences. Rents £7 and upwards and houses of 3 apartments from £10 to £11. James Shaw, 17 Bowling Green St, Leith.

02/10/1889 – Dundee Advertiser – Picker or breaker and 2 carding machines in excellent order. Used for manufacturing oakum. Shaw, 17 Bowling Green St, Leith.
