Gilchrist and Goldie Shawfield Toll Glasgow 1872
— 03/03/2021Found by Richard Dobbin in the Bridgeton area of Glasgow. Manufactured by Gilchrist & Goldie, Shawfield Toll Brickworks, Glasgow. . . . .
Found on the old site previously occupied by Giscol when they took over the Etna Brickworks, Bathville, West Lothian.
The bricks are cored and are stamped on a stretcher.
They are dated 29/03/91 and 07/11/91.
It looks like they were used to build some sort of office block on the site. Now demolished and mostly cleared.
The stretchers and headers of the bricks are textured.

Below – A similar stamped Giscol brick but this type is not dated. Again they have a textured side and 3 cores. This was found on the same site as above.

Below – This appears to be a solid paver type brick. This was found on the same site as above. It is stamped Giscol 14 12 07 (or 01) 90 Giscol. The last 6 numerals could be a date with the first two (14) being the line or brick making machine number.

Many thanks to Terrence Honore and the Palmiste Historical Society for the following information. These Scottish bricks were found on the Cedar Grove, Canaan Palmiste Estates, Trinidad. They were formerly owned by Scotsmen like the Lamonts. A chimney of bricks from that era 1810, still stands, along with bridges and a few other structures. The…

Found by Simon Scott in the Kilmarnock area. This is a byre or stable paver. This example is not in my possession. J & M Craig, Perceton Fireclay Works, Dreghorn, Ayrshire. . . .
Found by Nina C Baker in the Glasgow area. I am not in possession of this example. Although the date area of the brick is broken it looks fairly certain that it reads 1865. (Far right of the bottom line of text). Gilchrist & Goldie Old Langside Road Glasgow. . .
Interesting theory regarding the variations of the same ‘Newbattle 1862’ stamp found on a number of bricks in the Dalkeith area. Ian Suddaby states – This photograph charts the disintegration of the brickmark within a wooden mould. The letters and numbers were made of metal and must have been either screwed or riveted onto the…

Found by Drew Mitchell on the site of the old Lassodie Brickworks. Lassodie appears never to have stamped their bricks. They are known to have manufactured 3 cored bricks. This brick was found on-site and is believed to be a product of the works. Note the textured stretcher face. Lassodie Brickworks, Braehead, Fife aka Kelty…
