Gilbertfield Colliery & Brickworks, Halfway, Cambuslang, South Lanarkshire

Owned by the Cambuslang Coal Company. The Brick Works Department appears to have been called the Cambuslang Brickmaking Company, Halfway, Cambuslang, Glasgow.

21/02/1880 – Rutherglen Reformer – The first general meeting of shareholders of the Cambuslang Coal Company was held on Monday in the Secretary’s Chambers, West Nile Street. Mr Muirhead occupied the chair. The Manager (Mr Russell) reported as to the operations that were presently being carried on at the coal field. Pits were being sunk at the north of the road leading from Cambuslang to Hamilton and boring operations showed that there are six seams of coal the ell seam being only a little over 30 fathoms from the surface. In order to utilise the fine bed of clay on the property a brick yard had been started and already large orders had been executed. £100 would put the brick field in complete working order for manufacturing bricks so that for the expenditure of £200 the company would be in the possession of a brick field, which a few years ago would have cost £500. In regard to the quantity of coals, there was, in his opinion sufficient to last for three times the length of their lease. The secretary’s report was next read to the meeting from which it appeared that from the 8th October last, the date on which operations been commenced up to the 16th inst,  the total expenditure had amounted to £2961 18s 2d and receipts to £3419 15 leaving a balance in hand of £448 2s 10d. The reports were approved. Mr Haldane moved and Mr Abercrombie seconded the re-election of the directors which was unanimously agreed to. (Gilbertfield Brickworks?)

Inspector of Factories, the Cambuslang Brickmaking Company were charged (1) with employing a girl under the age of 16 in their brickworks, and a couple of boys under that age; without having first obtained the certificate of efficiency from the certified surgeon of the district; (2) with employing a young person without having made proper entries in the Factories Register; and (3) with failing to keep affixed in the factory an abstract copy of the Factories Acts.
