Source – Arthur H Vinal in his book Edmund March Wheelwright and the chestnut hill, suggests that Wheelwright, Architect, used Gartcraig bricks in several buildings.
“Wheelwright experimented with the pale yellow Scottish firebricks that he used back to front to expose the random black streaking from the kiln, as for instance in the palatial Larz Anderson ‘Weld’ Estate Carriage House, the Brighton Police House, The Williams school, and Ashmont Firehouse. Many thanks to Bruce MacDonald for the following photographs which were taken at The Sunbury Plantation House, St Philip Parish Barbados. All the bricks present were fire bricks and included English manufacturers such as Ruffors of Stourbridge, Cowen of Newcastle and Duddell of Fenton. 90% of the bricks present appear to have been stamped ‘Glenboig’….
