Harry states –
We found during an excavation of a former tide mill on the border between Niel and Boom, this Dougall brick.
It was found near the place of the former steam engine.
These bricks could have been imported on behalf of the ICGA, a London based company, who operated a gasworks on the border of Hemiksem and Hoboken.
We know that the ICGA (Imperial Continental Gas Association) was keen to use English material.
It was general practice that “burnt out” bricks after their service in a retort were sold and re-used.
There was no shortage of normal bricks in the Rupel area (they also exported regular bricks to the UK), but no local brickworks produced this kind.
