Early reference to the use of bing waste for making composition bricks.

17/04/1865  – Glasgow Herald – To let – several large and extensive waste hills in connection with a colliery. The railway accommodation is well suited for either the Edinburgh or Glasgow market. The material will make composition brick of the best quality. Coal and dross can be had on the ground and there is a seam of fire clay of the finest quality at present being wrought which may be had at a moderate price per ton.
